Best Chiropractor for You-Introduction

I am working on the finishing touches to my new book, How to Find the Best Chiropractor for You, and would like to share some excerpts from it with you.

Please give me some feedback. Your comments and questions will be greatly appreciated. I want to make this the best book I can and am eager to address the most important issues and questions people have about finding the right chiropractor.

How to Find the Best Chiropractor for You-Introduction

Choosing the right chiropractor is not as simple as looking in the yellow pages for the one who is nearest you. Certainly, you could do it that way, but the chances are good that it will not work out that well for you. The fact is that picking any professional out of the yellow pages is not a good idea.

I have for many years made a habit of checking out the yellow page ads of chiropractors when I am traveling. I do this for two reasons: I like to see if there is anyone I know in the area, and I like to see what other doctors say about themselves and their practices.

But it is certainly not the best way to select a chiropractor or, for that matter, any doctor. While the phone book or a Google search may show you which doctors are in your area, it will not tell you the most important things you need to know about them. To find one that is right for you will require a bit more digging.

Your main concern should be that the doctor you choose is right for you. One who will meet your needs on all levels.

My purpose in writing this book is to assist you in your search for the right chiropractor because I want you to have the best possible experience with my colleagues and profession. I know that the right chiropractor can be a tremendous asset to you and your family, a partner who will work with you to help you attain your optimal level of wellness.

Chiropractic is not just a treatment for neck and back pain, so I don’t want anyone to get stuck on that idea. You will gain a greater appreciation of the broad range of conditions your chiropractor will be able to help you with later in the book. I will show you by example that chiropractors can take care of many conditions you may not have considered.

Modern chiropractic training prepares chiropractic physicians to take care of many of your primary healthcare needs. Contemporary chiropractors are highly trained specialists in the field of natural, noninvasive healthcare. Chiropractors focus on health and all of the factors that support it. We know that health and self healing are normal for a body that is working properly. Sickness and disease are aberrations and are the result of a deficiency of one or more of the things or conditions the body needs to be healthy.

It is important to understand the true meaning of health. Health is a state of optimal physical, mental and social well being, not just the absence of disease or symptoms. It is a state of wholeness in which all parts of the body are working properly and together for the benefit of the whole. The word health comes from the Greek word hale which means whole. This is also where we get the term holistic health care.

The key to attaining and maintaining good health is to provide all the elements the body needs to function properly, resist disease, heal itself and carry on the lifelong process of constantly rebuilding itself.

Most of us, however, need a little help to achieve this. We need guidance and coaching. Chiropractors are the healthcare providers who are best equipped by education, technical training and philosophical orientation to help you achieve optimum functioning for health and vitality.

Chiropractic treatment helps people to get out of pain and function more comfortably, of course, but beyond that it can help you achieve the good structural and neurological balance which is vital to health and healing.

And if you want to go beyond getting structural care, a good chiropractor can help to educate, guide and coach you in all aspects of nutrition and fitness to help you achieve a healthier lifestyle and a better you.

The fact that you are reading this book suggests that you understand the importance of finding the right chiropractor for you and your needs. My role is to give you all of the information you need to help you find the right one. I will give you the criteria you should look for to find the right match.

Best Chiropractor for You

Again, I am eager to share some of my  new book with you and would love feedback.  Below is Chapter One of How to Find the Best Chiropractor for You.

How to Find The Best Chiropractor for You-Chapter One

I Want to Share the Benefit of My Experience

I have been a chiropractor for over 45 years. If you include my four years in chiropractic school, that adds up to nearly a half century of experience in the profession. I want to share the benefit of my experience with you as a chiropractor and also as a chiropractic patient.

Actually, my experience as a chiropractic patient began when I was a young child. As an infant I was diagnosed with bronchial asthma. The condition was chronic and severe, and on more occasions than I or my parents could recall, it lapsed into life threatening bronchial pneumonia.

My father, a pharmacist, tried every medication possible to try to help me, but without success. He took me to the very best specialists available in New York City. Finally, when I was about ten he took me to what he thought was our last, best hope, the doctor known as “The Very Best” lung specialist in The City and probably the world. Even way back in the 1950’s this doctor charged several hundred dollars for the visit. He could not help me. Finally, desperate to save me, my father committed an act of medical treason and took me to a chiropractor. In those days chiropractors were not licensed in New York and the medical establishment regarded them as quacks.

Immediately my health began to change for the better. My response to chiropractic spinal adjustments was remarkable. My health improved beyond my parent’s wildest dreams. The episodes of bronchial asthma diminished by about 90% within just a couple of months, and as long as I kept my spine in alignment the condition remained under control.

This was my introduction to chiropractic and the inspiration for my chosen future career.

For some 30 years I practiced in the Hamptons on eastern Long Island, and for the past 15 years in the Abaco out islands of The Bahamas. Both were beach communities and popular vacation destinations, and in both practices I had the opportunity to see patients from all over the United States, Canada, South America, Europe and Africa, and of course, The Bahamas.

I have heard about many great chiropractors, but unfortunately I have also heard a lot of complaints.

And I would have to say the same about my own experience as a chiropractic patient. I have been treated by some fantastic chiropractors. I have also had my own share of disappointing experiences, and on more than one occasion have had to say, “No thank you,” and leave.

My own disappointing experiences in trying to find a good chiropractor for myself, as well as the stories of so many of my patients who have struggled to find the right chiropractor for themselves, is what inspired me to write this book. And it is why I will be giving you the best benefit I can from my personal experience in practice and as a patient to provide you with the guidelines I would use if I were choosing a DC for myself or a friend or family member.

Chiropractors-The Posture Experts

Posture, quality of movement and body balance are all a function of our spinal alignment.

Every chiropractor should be an authority on posture, but a growing number of chiropractors are making posture a major focus of their practices.

Posture is about much more than appearance, although a person with strong erect posture always looks better and younger than someone with slumped, weak posture. It is also a predictor of the quality of health and vitality.

Chiropractors know that people with forward head posture and round shoulders will develop arthritis at a greatly accelerated rate than might be expected from wear and tear as we age.

They will also experience reduced lung and breathing capacity because of restricted expansion and contraction of the rib cage. There will also be a reduction of the ability of the spine to fully flex and extend. This not only limits the ability to breath freely, but also inhibits the flow of spinal fluids up and down the length of the spinal cord and around the brain.

Chiropractors who specialize in postural analysis and correction utilize various spinal adjusting techniques to correct postural faults. They also prescribe rehabilitative exercise programs which are very effective in restoring and maintaining strong posture.

The only exercise programs that are effective are those that are done on a regular basis as part of a healthy lifestyle. Exercise is the only way to counteract the postural stress that is an inescapable part of most people’s lives.

Most of us spend too many hours each day sitting in cars, at a desk or in front of a TV, or engaged in repetitive motion activities that create structural imbalance in the body. Chiropractic posture specialists coach their patients in the ways they can support health by restoring and maintaining strong posture.

New Year Resolution Number One

The perennial New Year Resolution number one is lose weight and get in shape. Unfortunately, 88% of these resolutions are forgotten or abandoned by mid February.

This happens for a number of reasons. Injuries are at the top of the list. People frequently injure themselves because they begin an exercise program that is much too vigorous for their level of strength and flexibility.

The way to avoid injury is to “Get in shape to get in shape.” That means achieving a preliminary level of strength and flexibility before undertaking a more ambitious exercise program.

Once the preliminary level of conditioning is reached, it is important to proceed cautiously. You must resist the temptation to do too much too soon.

The connective tissues of the body gain slowly in strength and flexibility. Just because you can do a certain exercise a few times does not mean that you should immediately increase the number of repetitions or increase the amount of resistance or weight too soon. Increasing weight and/or repetitions too rapidly is the next most common cause of exercise related injury.

Slower is better because gaining stamina is as important a goal as increasing strength. This takes time, but it is time well spent.

There is a tendency for people to think that they must always challenge themselves with more intense workouts. More weight, more repetition, walking or running farther and faster. This leads to turning exercise into a test of endurance instead of a stimulating release of physical and emotional tension and stress.

Once the idea of having an exercise session becomes drudgery, the mind will create endless excuses to avoid it. That is because avoidance of discomfort or pain will always override seeking pleasure.

The answer lies in adopting an exercise program that you enjoy, feels good and does not cause undue stress on the body.

The right exercise program is one that you can easily incorporate into a healthy lifestyle and that you will be willing and able to do over the long haul.

Find The Best Chiropractor For You

Finding The Best Chiropractor for You

I am very excited about my soon to be released book: How to Find the Best Chiropractor for You. Kiana is busy editing and organizing the pre-publication details. I am putting together a resource section that will include lists of doctors qualified in a variety of specialized chiropractic techniques. I know this will be appreciated by the readers as they search for the right chiropractor to serve their health care needs.

I just finished the Preface to the book and would like to share that with you today.

In the next couple of weeks I will share other sections of the book here. I would very much appreciate your comments and suggestions. If there is something you would like me to include in the book, please let me know.

Preface

Thank goodness, finding the right chiropractor is not as difficult as finding the right mate. There are however some similarities. You could get lucky the first time, or you might have to kiss a few frogs before you find the right one.

Chiropractic is a very personal form of health care. That makes it important that there be good chemistry between you and your chiropractor.

Having the right chiropractor will be a great benefit to you and your family. He/she can help improve your quality of life and health on many levels.

Chiropractors provide a service to people that no other kind of doctor or therapist has to offer.

“Do I really need a chiropractor?” My answer to you is: “Only if you have a spine and nervous system.”

Your spine is your lifeline. It needs and deserves the best care you can give it. It is the center post of your body.

When it is in good alignment and working properly, it allows you to stand tall, lift, twist, bend, run, jump and do amazing things easily and comfortably. But when it is misaligned, sprained and strained, the slightest movement or chore can be agonizingly painful.

What many people do not know is that spinal problems are not always that obvious. Your spine can misalign slightly and function badly without causing tell-tale back pain. Instead it can cause major disruption of your “power and communications grid” AKA your nervous system. When this happens, there is no drug or surgery that can fix it.

It is this kind of spinal problem that chiropractors are trained to detect and correct. Sure, chiropractors can help you with back pain, and that is important because it will allow you to live, work and play comfortably. But keeping your nervous system free from brown outs, short circuits and power outages that cause even more serious health problems is the most important job of the chiropractor.

That is why finding the right one for you is so important, and why I want to help you choose the best one for you.

Best Defense Is A Good Offense

We have all heard this many times. The phrase was probably coined by some military leader, a long time ago and later repeated by football coaches, chess players and lawyers. The principal is a good one and can be applied to many situations in life. To me it means, take the fight to the enemy. Be proactive. It is much better to act than be forced to react.

This is a principle that should definitely be applied to how we approach our personal health.

Most people take a passive approach to their health. They wish and hope not to get sick, but do little if anything truly proactive.

In the Bahamas where I have practiced for the past 12 years, the incidence of diabetes is some of the highest per capita in the world. It is so prevalent that when I consult with a new patient, I always ask, “Are you diabetic?” The answer I frequently get is, “Not yet,” meaning that they are expecting to get it because most of their family members are diabetic. They just passively wait for it to happen.

When I ask, “What are you doing to prevent it?” I am always amazed when they say that they are doing nothing. They just accept it as inevitable. Even more amazing is their reaction when Kiana and I tell them that there are nutritional supplements and dietary changes that are proven to be effective in preventing and even reversing diabetes. More often than not they are disinterested, especially because it means changing their deadly cultural Bahamian diet. They would actually rather get sick than change their habits, even if it meant getting healthier and living longer.

The truth is that many people, not just Bahamians, have that kind of attitude about their health. Again, diabetes is a prime example. It is epidemic in America as well, not only in adults but in children as well. So many children now have “adult onset diabetes” the health authorities are having to re-think the name. Yet despite the tremendous amount of information that is readily available to help people prevent or reverse diabetes naturally, most people are simply not willing to put in the effort. I cannot relate to such a defeatist attitude.

And diabetes is not the only disease that can be prevented, improved or even reversed through dietary and lifestyle changes with the addition of some targeted nutritional supplements. There is a wealth of readily available information that can help people prevent most common infectious and degenerative diseases and conditions such as obesity, arthritis, heart disease and cancer.

Yet it seems most people are either ignorant of this health advice, or just don’t want to be bothered.

It only takes one walk through the average Wal-Mart to see that there is a huge population of Americans who are sick and will die young and in pain because they refuse to adopt a healthy lifestyle. One look in their shopping cart confirms that they ignore the healthy advice that is almost inescapable to anyone who watches TV, listens to the radio or reads popular magazines.

Making healthy choices and being proactive about one’s heath is not that hard. But It does require becoming an informed consumer and exercising self discipline to break unhealthy habits like smoking, guzzling sodas, eating junk food and spending endless hours as a couch potato in front of the TV.

If you are reading this blog, chances are pretty good that you are a person who cares about health and wants to be proactive to get healthier and stay that way. As I said, the best defense is a good offense.

It is time to make a game plan for a healthier you. And then to execute it.

I would like to help you do that.

In my future blogs, articles, reports and books I will be discussing a wide variety of pro-active health strategies that you can employ to help yourself stay youthful, energetic, strong and vital.

The best strategy in today’s complex, confusing and expensive “healthcare system” is to stay healthy in the first place. I would like to help you do that.

Age Is Just A Number

Age is just a number: I’ve heard that line for many years. I’ve even repeated it myself, but today it sounds different. That is because today, November 26, is my 70th birthday. Today seventy sounds like much more than a number, It’s in a whole different class than 30, 40, 50 or even 60.

Jimmy Buffet, who is only a few years younger than I, is fond of saying that just because you are getting older, doesn’t mean you have to grow up. I’ll drink to that! Growing up is certainly not on my agenda.

What I do want is to keep on swimming, sailing , shooting , driving too fast, playing my guitar and harmonica and making mad passionate love to my beautiful wife — not necessarily in that order.

I also want to continue to write and share my knowledge and experience with young chiropractors. I can help any who want to listen knock 20 years off their learning curve.

The truth is that age is more than the number we say when someone asks us how old we are. We actually have three ages, our chronological age, our attitudinal age and our biological age. Our chronological age is the only one we can’t do anything about, but we can certainly do something about our attitudinal and biological ages.

We can change our attitude from cranky curmudgeon to young enthusiast in a heartbeat. It’s a choice.

It is also a choice to adopt a healthy lifestyle.   Doing so, we can dramatically reduce our biological age.

I like how the Native Americans think of age. They don’t count the years, but recognize only three stages of life: youth, prime and old age. Youth is childhood, the stage of learning and growing. The next phase is adulthood, and is considered the prime of life; anyone who is an active and productive member of the tribe is said to be in his prime. There is no age limit on this phase of life.   Old age only begins when a person becomes infirm and no longer has the ability or desire to contribute to the tribe and has reached the point where he is looking forward to joining the ancestors.

The idea is to stay in the prime of life as long as possible, like a surfer riding the crest of a wave.

CLEAR Scoliosis Institute

Dr. Dennis Woggon, DC

Dr. Dennis Woggon

I have known CLEAR Scoliosis Institute founder and CEO Dr. Dennis Woggon for many years. When I interviewed him for an article about his research and work in the non-bracing, non-surgical treatment of scoliosis, I never expected to personally need to be treated by him.

I knew I had a badly damaged spine from years of cumulative traumas, but had not realized just how bad it had become.

My years of high volume practice as a chiropractor had taken their toll on my own spine, as had multiple injuries sustained over decades of water skiing, surfing and boating.  The past several years spent living and practicing in the rugged out islands of the Bahamas was harder on my spine than I anticipated that it would be.

Regularly commuting by boat to see my patients on other islands, often in very rough seas and in the dark is challenging to say the least. While I love boating and do not usually mind rough water, there were many times when I went out in weather that I would have preferred to see from shore. Crashing through big, breaking seas is bad enough. But securing a large, heavy boat to a dock while wind and waves are working against you is like wrestling with a 6,000 pound bucking horse! Worse yet were the times when I had to anchor in huge seas to avoid crashing on the nearby rocks while I did an repair on an engine that had died. And yes, that happened more than once! Such were the realities of my life in the islands.

When finally my pain was so unrelenting and severe that I could not do the day to day things my life demanded, I flew to the States and had some good X rays taken. The net result of all those years of cumulative trauma was a spine so severely damaged it was hard for me to look at and acknowledge as my own. The damage can easily be seen on the X ray of my lumbar spine in the picture below.

Even the untrained eye can see the serious misalignment and partial collapse of my third lumbar vertebrae. So serious was that misalignment and resultant scoliosis that any worsening could have easily caused irreparable spinal cord damage. Seeing this, I asked Dr. Woggon to look at the X ray and to give me his opinion of my treatment options and prognosis.

His answer surprised me. “I know this looks bad, Bill, but I can fix it. I see spines like this every day.” He said. “Spend a week at my clinic in St. Cloud and I will take care of it. “

That was an offer I couldn’t refuse. A month later, I arrived at The St. Cloud Chiropractic Clinic and Clear Scoliosis Institute to begin intensive treatment, five hours a day for five full days.

I could not help but be impressed, the moment I entered the 9,000 square foot clinic. The staff is warm, friendly, efficient and very well trained. They also obviously love their jobs, and are proud of the work they do and the results that they assist Dr. Woggon to achieve with his patients.

The clinic itself is highly organized, designed and equipped for its very specialized purpose, without being cold and sterile. The various treatment areas are large and spacious to allow several patients to be treated at the same time on different pieces of equipment while being overseen by the staff.

Prior to traveling to Minnesota I had MRIs taken of my cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. I then sent them to Dr. Woggon so he could review them in advance of my arrival. MRIs, while valuable to detect degenerative changes and pathology, do not provide the kind of information necessary to measure and analyze the precise nature and details of a scoliosis. That information can only be provided by a precision biomechanical engineering analysis of X-rays taken with specialized equipment.

My first morning at the clinic began with very extensive and detailed chiropractic, neurological and orthopedic examinations, followed by a series of precise spinal X-rays using specially aligned equipment to produce distortion free images so that he could properly analyze my condition. I have in fact never seen any doctor perform as thorough an examination.

My first afternoon session began with Dr. Woggon giving me a full report of findings. In this report, he explained all examination and X-ray results and measurements of the spinal misalignments. He then outlined his treatment plan designed to obtain maximum correction.

The treatment protocols used at the Clear Scoliosis Institute are the product of Dr. Woggon’s decades of practice and research. They are highly specialized, requiring equipment designed or customized by him.

A Day at the CLEAR Institute

A day of treatment at CLEAR consists of a morning and an afternoon session, each taking approximately 2 ½ hours. A round of treatment consists of ten separate stations, each is precisely designed and timed to address the exact configuration of the scoliosis.

Part of each treatment session is a spinal adjustment by Dr. Woggon himself. That means that twice in every treatment day he personally evaluates and monitors the patient’s progress and performs a specific spinal adjustment.

Adjustments of the lumbar and thoracic areas of the spine are done manually, but the cervical area is adjusted with an Arthrostim® which is a hand held electronic adjusting instrument. The reason for this is that the cervical spine requires a higher level of precision that can best be provided by instrument.

Dr. Woggon has taken precision adjusting of the cervical spine to a whole new level. The first adjustment is monitored in real time using Digital Motion X-ray – in other words, a motion picture X-ray. This allows him to see how the spine reacts to the adjustment as he does it, assuring him that it is having the desired effect.

Spinal correction using Digital Motion X-ray (DMX) is unique to The Clear Scoliosis Clinic and constitutes the high water mark of scientific chiropractic correction. The information and data that Dr. Woggon has accumulated in his seven years of using DMX has better enabled him to teach his work to other Chiropractors and certify the one hundred and forty doctors who are currently qualified in the use of his protocols.

When I expressed concern about the amount of radiation exposure the patient would receive in the initial and follow up visits using the DMX, I was amazed to learn that the intensifying screen that picks up the image of the patients spine is 28,000 times more sensitive than standard X-ray screens. That means eight minutes of exposure would subject the patient to less radiation than one standard spinal X-ray. It must however be noted here that Dr. Woggon views the patient with the DMX for seconds, NOT MINUTES, so X-ray exposure is minimal.

My week of treatment At the Clear Scoliosis Institute was very intense but not at all unpleasant or painful. This is confirmed by the fact that my rotations through the clinic were shared by two other people, a three year old girl with a severe scoliosis and visible deformity, and the other a small frail seventy seven year old woman with a scoliosis that occurred late in life as the result of a bad fall and neck injury.

Not once during the entire week did I hear a word of complaint or expression of pain from either the child or the woman. Although the equipment and treatment might look intimidating, it is in no way something to be feared.

My Personal Results After a Week of Treatment

At the end of my week with him, Dr. Woggon reexamined me and did comparative X-rays and measurements to determine the amount of correction he had achieved.

Below see my pre-treatment X-rays showing the spinal analysis and Cobb angles compared to the same X-ray views taken post treatment only a few days later. They confirm an 80% measurable correction of my scoliosis. That degree of correction is unheard of by any other method of treatment in any time frame, but especially after only a week of treatment.

Although I was considering quitting practice, I now have hope and at 69 years I am looking forward to the future and practicing again!

Some Interesting Facts About Scoliosis

During my time with him, Dr. Woggon shared some of his important research findings with me.

The facts that should be of most interest to the general public and especially to anyone who has scoliosis themselves or has a child diagnosed with scoliosis are these:

When the majority of people are diagnosed medically with scoliosis, it is said to be idiopathic, which means of unknown origin. This means that unless spinal X-rays clearly show congenital deformity or evidence of spinal trauma, which was true in my case, the scoliosis is said to be of unknown origin.

However, Dr. Woggon does not agree with the “idiopathic” diagnosis. He has found that in most cases referred to as idiopathic, there is indeed an identifiable cause.

The statistics he has compiled over the course of several decades of research clearly show a connection between scoliosis and birth trauma that has caused damage to important stabilizing ligaments of the upper cervical spine as well as adversely affecting the spinal cerebellar tracts of the central nervous system.

These important nerve pathways control muscle balance, control and coordination as well as blood distribution. The full implication of the importance of this kind of birth injury to the neck cannot be overstated, but a complete discussion is very technical and beyond the scope of this book.

For those interested in learning more please contact me at Dr.Bill@DrWilliamHKoch.com or contact the CLEAR Institute at [need good contact link for more information about this subject].

Dr. Dennis Woggon with Dr. Bill Koch

Dr. Dennis Woggon with Dr. Bill Koch

The important thing for my readers to know is that these birth injuries are almost never recognized in medical circles. Even when they are undeniably demonstrated, the connection between neck injury at birth and scoliosis is denied. Especially by obstetricians fearing liability.

Dr. Woggon’s research findings are so specific and conclusive, however, that he can accurately predict whether a right or left handed obstetrician delivered a child who later developed scoliosis. This is based on which ligaments were damaged and the known technique used by obstetricians to assist in the presentation of the baby’s head and shoulders.

A Word of Caution for Parents

The usual medical advice to the parents of children who are suspected of beginning to develop scoliosis or who already have a confirmed scoliosis diagnosis is to “watch and wait to see if it worsens.” This is without a doubt bad advice.

Time is critical. Untreated, scoliosis will worsen as the child grows and gains weight while the spine buckles progressively under the force of gravity. The ideal time to begin corrective treatment is well before the pubescent growth spurt.

While never too late, the best chance for maximum correction occurs the sooner scoliosis is diagnosed and treatment is begun with a Clear Scoliosis Institute Certified Chiropractic Physician.
